Rauw Alejandro
Despacito is a 2017 song that was released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It became the top popular streamed song worldwide within just the space of six months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music did not just draw interest back to the genre, but also to Latin music as a whole. The Billboard Top 100 had four songs predominantly in Spanish in 2016, compared to two in 2015. The popularity of Despacito reached its peak in the year 2017. In 2020, 41 mostly Spanish songs will be included in the top 100. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix to Despacito (2017) popular musicians soon started collaborating with reggaeton artists, including Drake and Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna and Maluma on Medellin (2019). In 2020, a few Reggaeton artists were complaining about the direction of the genre towards the mainstream. However, a younger generation such as Rauw Alejandro was keen to continue the evolution. The genre often incorporated electronic dance, as well as other forms.
